About Vancouver

Overview

Vancouver is so far from any other cities because the vast Pacific Ocean lies to the west, while the Rocky Mountains are situated to the east. Although this might be a fairly isolated city, there’s still so much to do and see in Vancouver itself.

Why Choose Serviced Apartments in Vancouver?

There are certainly a large number of accommodation options in any large city. However, many corporate visitors so often find that not all these holiday rental options meet their expectations when visiting Vancouver.

Situ’s serviced apartments in Vancouver are a very different experience to staying in a traditional hotel. Fully equipped with modern kitchens, comfortable bedrooms, and free wi-fi, Situ’s furnished corporate apartments in Vancouver are designed to provide guests with a genuine ‘home from home’ experience. Many of our apartments and pet friendly accommodation offer free on-site parking, housekeeping, and laundry services too.

Situ’s self-catering apartments in Vancouver are ideal for cooking when you need to, although if you don’t fancy eating in, you can of course go to any of the excellent restaurants in the city and downtown Vancouver.

We source only the highest quality long-term or short-stay apartments in Vancouver, confident that they stand comparison with the Vancouver holidays hotels and B&Bs in the city. Situ has a range of accommodation throughout Vancouver city centre and the surrounding area. Of course, you can always select an aparthotel in Vancouver, which combines the comfort and privacy of an apartment with the facilities of a hotel, such as a reception, business meeting rooms, or perhaps a gym and pool in Vancouver.

Where is Vancouver?

Vancouver is in the far south-west of Canada, on the Pacific coast, 32 miles north of the United States border.

When you consider the entire Vancouver metropolitan area, it ranks as the country’s third largest city and the biggest in the west of the country. Around 700,000 reside within the city limits, but as many as 2.5 million people live in Greater Vancouver.

The two largest cities in Canada are a long way from Vancouver, after all this is the second largest country on earth. The largest, Toronto, lies 2,090 miles to the east, while the second largest, Montreal, is 2,287 miles away to the east. It’s also 2,200 miles in an easterly direction to the capital, Ottawa.

Cities situated closer to Vancouver include Calgary and Edmonton, which are respectively the fourth and fifth largest in the country, but it’s still 660 and 510 miles in a north-easterly direction to each of these. The nearest major city is probably Seattle in the US, 143 miles to the south.

The province in which Vancouver is located is called British Columbia and the official currency is the Canadian dollar.

Vancouver has been described as the most Asian city on earth outside of Asia, with around 43% of residents having Asian heritage – around two-thirds of these have Chinese origins.

English is the official language and the language you’re likely to use when doing business and visiting tourist sites. Around 40% of residents speak another language at home, with Punjabi, Mandarin, and Cantonese the most commonly spoken besides English.

You can fly to Vancouver from a number of cities in Europe, North America, and Asia. Once you’ve arrived, the SkyTrain and the rest of the city public transport network is superb, with very frequent and efficient services that extend well into the city’s suburbs.

Business in Vancouver

Canada is one of the 10 largest economies in the world. As its third largest city, Vancouver generates approximately 8% of its national Gross Domestic Product. Salaries and employment rates here are generally higher than the national average.

The largest business sectors in Vancouver include tourism, insurance, and financial services, natural resources, real estate, film and TV production, and construction. Technology, digital entertainment, and the environment-related green economy are all credited with driving the city’s recent economic growth.

Things to Do in Vancouver

Vancouver Island lies immediately opposite the downtown area, and a boat or seaplane tour of the city’s islands is highly recommended.

Vancouver is a very densely populated city, but also has a number of areas where you can seek peace and quiet. At 1,000 acres, Stanley Park is the third largest city park in North America. People come here all year round to walk, run, or cycle along the SeaWall, to visit the aquarium, or to explore the rainforest.

The city is also noted for its arts and culture and boasts a number of fantastic museums. Vancouver art gallery, The Museum of Anthropology has a huge collection of artefacts from indigenous communities across the world. Housed in an enormous geodesic dome, Telus World of Science is packed with interactive family-friendly exhibits. The Beaty Biodiversity Museum, at the University of British Columbia, is a stunning showcase of the local flora and fauna.

You’ll also find numerous world-class restaurants, from fine dining to traditional local fare.

Transport

By Air

Vancouver boasts the second largest airport in Canada. By the standards of large cities around the world, its airport is located close by, being just seven miles south of the downtown area.

From Vancouver International, you can fly to around 70 cities. There are internal flights to Canadian cities such as Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton, Montreal, and Winnipeg. There are services to other regions of the Americas, including Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago, Mexico City, and Las Vegas. You can also fly directly to Vancouver from London, Frankfurt, New Delhi, Tokyo, Singapore, and Sydney, amongst others.

By Rail

The metro rail system in Vancouver is called the ‘SkyTrain’, and it claims to be the longest automated rapid transit system in the world. The 42 miles of track extend well beyond the city limits to a number of areas to the south and east, including the airport and the suburbs of Richmond, Burnaby, Surrey, Coquitlam, and White Rock. Trains operate between 5am and 1am and run as often as every two minutes at peak times.

By Bus

There are hundreds of bus routes linking the city with outlying areas such as Burnaby, New Westminster, West Vancouver, Bowen Island, Maple Ridge, North Delta, Surrey, White Rock, and Langley. Services are as frequent as every ten minutes on the busiest routes, and some of these are SeaBuses that serve Vancouver Island and other offshore areas.
