As with many towns of its size and age, Uttoxeter was for a long time a market town and you can still find stalls operating in the centre.
In Staffordshire, but close to the Derbyshire border, Uttoxeter occupies a fairly central position, its majority bordered by the A518 running to where Stafford lies about 12 miles to the southwest and the A50 to Stoke-on-Trent, just under 15 miles to the northwest. This central position is one reason that you might come seeking serviced apartments in Uttoxeter, with another being the presence of the racecourse, which has been in place since 1907 and is home to the Midlands Grand National. Also, about 4 miles outside the town, is the headquarters of the digger manufacturer JCB, perhaps the most well-known manufacturer of this type of industrial vehicle.
Uttoxeter also has a golf club, which is conveniently located right next to the racecourse and overlooks the River Dove that flows by about a mile east of the town, and its proximity both to Alton Towers theme park – arguably the UK’s most famous theme park – and also the Peak District National Park, all adds up to make it a pleasant base for visiting other attractions.
If you are coming to stay in Uttoxeter business accommodation, whether in the town or perhaps while planning a short stay at Uttoxeter Racecourse, it will be hard not to notice how quaint it is. Areas such as Market Place and Market Street in the centre of town include some beautiful old buildings, Ye Olde Talbot opposite the Johnson Memorial being a particularly fine example. As with many towns of its size and age, Uttoxeter was for a long time a market town and you can still find stalls operating in the centre.
For a town of only about 13,000 people, Uttoxeter has an excellent range of options when eating out. Perhaps this is due to the proximity of the racecourse, which is within easy walking distance of the town centre, as it seems in some parts of the town that pretty much every other premises are an eatery of some kind. Something else that the Uttoxeter does well is fitness facilities, with a new fitness centre having opened in 2015 with a gym, venue and courts, cafe and multiple swimming pools. In fact, one of Uttoxeter’s claims to fame is being the hometown of the extremely successful Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty.
If you’re looking to fill in some time while on a self-catering holiday in Uttoxeter, there are plenty of good days out within just a few miles of the town. The JCB factory tour is a fascinating place to start, while the Museum of Childhood at Sudbury Hall holds a fascinating collection of toys and other items. Also, there are some wonderful spas nearby, at the Alton Towers Hotel and also at Hoar Cross Hall. Finally, for a free hour or two out and about, there’s the 12th-century Croxden Abbey – or rather its imposing remains – situated a little over four miles roughly north of the town and, although owned by English Heritage, the site is free to visit.
