In Staffordshire, but close to the Derbyshire border, Uttoxeter occupies a fairly central position, its majority bordered by the A518 running to where Stafford lies about 12 miles to the southwest and the A50 to Stoke-on-Trent, just under 15 miles to the northwest. Finally, for a free hour or two out and about, there’s the 12th-century Croxden Abbey – or rather its imposing remains – situated a little over four miles roughly north of the town and, although owned by English Heritage, the site is free to visit.
