Academic travellers also come seeking serviced apartments there, as Twickenham is home to both St Mary’s University and Richmond upon Thames College. More than this, London Heathrow Airport is less than five miles away, making the corporate accommodation in Twickenham ideal for international travellers, while Chertsey Road provides a quick route out to the M3 and M25 beyond that.
Although not part of the London underground system, Twickenham has two train stations, Twickenham and St Margaret’s, both of which run South Western Railway trains with services into London Waterloo, Wimbledon, Reading, Chiswick and Windsor. The London Waterloo train will typically take business visitors staying in our furnished apartments from Twickenham into the centre in around half an hour, although be aware that slower trains may take quite a bit longer.
As with some other nearby areas, Twickenham nicely mixes a small town – almost village-like – life-style with the variety of shops and amenities you would expect so close to London’s centre. There are charming riverside pubs like The White Swan and individual eateries, such as the excellent array of choices along Church Street. King Street, York Street and London Road have the familiar names and practical, down-to-earth everyday places… you know, like a supermarket. Okay, it’s a Waitrose. Seriously, though, if you do crave a larger choice of shops, Kingston upon Thames is just a little upriver and has the sort of large shopping centre that is required to satiate certain shopping needs.
Twickenham is also convenient for Hampton Court Palace, which lies less than three miles to the south, past Bushy park and close to Hampton Wick. Somewhere else worth visiting while staying in our furnished short lets in Twickenham is Strawberry Hill House. The area of Strawberry Hill is just to the south of Twickenham – a short walk and one stop on the train – and Strawberry Hill House offers a wonderfully gothic castle-style manor house to explore, as well as beautiful gardens which are free to enjoy. There is also the opportunity to hire parts of the house for corporate purposes.
One of Twickenham’s fun little oddities that is definitely worth a look while in corporate housing there is Eel Pie Island – a name that is as quirky and fun as the island itself. This tiny island in the centre of the Thames is about 500 metres long and occupies a little under nine acres of space. It can only be reached by a footbridge across to Twickenham and, of course, by boat. Yet the island has around 50 homes, over 120 people living there and various businesses, including boatyards. It is a popular place for artists and has had some legendary musical connections over the years. The island even has its own museum although – perhaps as there is no room for it – the museum is located on Richmond Road.
And, yes, finally there is the rugby. People do come seeking temporary housing in Twickenham to be close to the stadium, often to see big matches, but also for plenty of other events that happen there.
