In the early 18th century, Coalbrookdale led the world in bringing ground-breaking new methods to the iron industry. This site now lies on the edge of the modern town of Telford, where the innovative business spirit remains very much alive three hundred years later.

Telford is in the English county of Shropshire in England, United Kingdom, which is in the West Midlands region.
It’s one of England’s ‘new towns’, meaning that it was planned in the 1960s and 1970s – the land which this large town now occupies was originally the smaller towns of Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley, and Dawley, and the rural areas that existed between them. Dawley New Town was the name originally given to the newly formed conurbation, but it was later renamed after legendary canal engineer Thomas Telford.
Telford is the largest town in Shropshire. Here you’re close to many of the cities of the West Midlands. England’s second city, Birmingham, is 28 miles south-east of Telford, while Wolverhampton is 19 miles to the south-east. Shropshire’s county town of Shrewsbury lies 15 miles west of Telford.
You can fly into Birmingham from destinations across the world, and then travel to Telford by train.
Telford styles itself as ‘the birthplace of industry’, largely because the district of Ironbridge is to be found on the outskirts of the town. In 1709, the Coalbrookdale iron foundry was established here, which delivered massively important innovations in the way iron was smelted.
Coalbrookdale’s foundry is still in operation today, with Coalbrookdale stoves amongst the items manufactured there. However, modern day Telford has a broad-based economy, with industries such as engineering, automotive, metal and plastic manufacture, food and drink and information technology/ digital all being prominent business sectors. Today, the nickname sometimes used for Telford’s business district is ‘the silicon suburb’. Larger companies active in the town include Heinz, Aga, BAE Systems, Hitachi, and CapGemini.
As we have seen, manufacturing activity continues to this day at Coalbrookdale. Many people who visit this World Heritage Site today, however, are tourists, who have come to see the small town of Ironbridge Gorge, and the bridge across the River Severn which inspired its name.
Built in the late 18th century, it was the first cast iron bridge in the world, and it still stands proud today as a symbol of Britain’s role in the Industrial Revolution. There are also as many as 10 museums telling the story of the area’s industrial heritage.
Many of the UK’s new towns have impressive parks and green spaces, and Telford is no exception. Telford Town Park is a popular recreational destination, with its running trails, fishing ponds, adventure golf course, and playgrounds. It’s also home to some impressive gardens.
Broseley, on the banks of the Severn near the Iron Bridge, boasts the 16th century manor house Benthall Hall. Buildwas Abbey is well worth seeing – highlights of this English Heritage site include the tile-floored chapter house and the crypt chapel.
Birmingham Airport is located 34 miles south-east of Telford. From here you can fly to and from more than 150 global destinations. These include Dublin, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Barcelona, Prague, Rome, Brussels, Madrid, Dubai, Istanbul, Marrakesh, Cancun, and Amritsar.
Telford Central railway station – located close to the town centre shopping area - has several departures per hour to Birmingham, via Wolverhampton. These trains take around 40 minutes to reach Birmingham New Street, with some continuing to the airport station at Birmingham International.
Although there is only an hourly service on many of the town’s routes, Telford has direct bus connections to Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, Stafford, Shifnal, Much Wenlock, and Wolverhampton.
