About Shrewsbury

Overview

Packed with independent cafes, restaurants, shops and galleries, alongside its glorious parkland and ancient buildings, Shrewsbury is a great place to live and work.

Why Serviced Apartments in Shrewsbury?

Serviced apartments are becoming an increasingly popular accommodation choice for corporates. Even a one-bedroom apartment is typically much larger than a room in a high-end hotel, while the rental price is likely to be lower. It is also much easier to turn a serviced apartment into a ‘home from home’, as there are cooking, dining and washing facilities, as well as free WiFi included in a stay.

Situ’s Shrewsbury apartments also make it easier to hold business meetings - or meetings with family and friends. The apartment is likely to have a dining table or somewhere else that’s convenient for a meeting, even if there isn’t a sitting room area. Depending on the personal wishes of the business traveller, it’s possible to stay in a serviced apartment within walking distance of Shrewsbury town centre, close to all the amenities, or a quieter location away from the centre. Unlike standard hotels, some of our properties have their own restaurants too, while others offer housekeeping and laundry services. All of these facilities are available at various serviced apartments in Shrewsbury.

Where is Shrewsbury?

Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire based in the West Midlands region of England, 48 miles north-west of Birmingham. Just nine miles to the west is the Welsh border. The town also lies in a loop of the River Severn and two of the crossings are known as English Bridge and Welsh Bridge. Around 72,000 people live there, making Shrewsbury the largest town in the county.

People living in Shrewsbury enjoy a very high quality of life – so said the respected Sunday Times Best Places To Live survey in 2020, where the town achieved eighth place in the entire Midlands region and was ranked top in Shropshire. The judging panel praised the townsfolk’s “good old-fashioned local pride” and said there was no “identikit chain-packed high street” or “grim concrete shopping centre”.

Business & Economy in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury is not a huge town and there are no large cities in the immediate vicinity, so the local economy is primarily based around small and medium-sized enterprises. The main sources of employment include health, education, retail, manufacturing and land-based industries. Levels of unemployment in Shropshire are notably lower than the national average, and the percentage of those aged 16 to 64 who are economically active is significantly higher than in the UK as a whole. Shrewsbury-based businesses might like to look at what support they can get from the following sources:

The Shrewsbury Business Chamber. The Chamber seeks to lobby the government and other influential stakeholders on behalf of its members. It can advise businesses on where they can access grant funding and on how Government legislation and initiatives might affect them. The Chamber holds regular networking events where members can not only express their views on local issues but can also strike vital business links with fellow members.

The Shropshire Business Board. The Board serves as the voice of businesses across the county when seeking to lobby Shropshire County Council. It also encourages inward investment from the private sector.

INC Shropshire. This is a breakfast networking club where businesses can give 10-minute presentations to fellow attendees.

The Marches Growth Hub. This organisation offers advice to businesses on grants and loans they may be eligible for.

Visit the websites of any of these organisations to find out more about the business climate in the town. For information on serviced apartments in Shrewsbury, get in touch with a member of our team.

Things to Do in Shrewsbury

Shropshire’s county town has a lot to offer, whether corporates are staying in short or long term Shrewsbury apartments. After all, with almost 800 listed buildings in Shrewsbury, just strolling around can be enough to lift the spirit. Attractions in the town include the 11th-century sandstone castle, which now houses the Regimental Museum. The Abbey Church also dates from the 11th century and is well worth a visit, especially for fans of the Brother Cadfael novels. Another large town centre church, St Chad’s, is notable for its unusual circular nave.

Encircled by the river, Quarry Park is the jewel in the crown at the heart of the town. Other than its beautiful river views, the highlight of the park is The Dingle, a stunning communal garden created by world-famous gardener Percy Thrower. Every June the town's Food Festival attracts 20,000 people to Quarry Park.

Off the main tourist trail, why not try Ditherington Flax Mill, which claims to be the world's oldest iron-framed building; or the Bear Steps Gallery, where local artists exhibit in a stunning timber-framed medieval building, and where it’s possible to buy a truly individual jewellery item for a loved one. For a celebration of all things local, get down to the Town Square every second Saturday for the Fair in the Square market, where you'll find a fantastic selection of Shropshire artists, craftspeople and food vendors.

There’s plenty going on after dark too, from the Buttermarket and C21 nightclubs to the Albert’s Shed live music venue. The Walrus and the Golden Cross are rapidly making a name for themselves as destinations that offer fine dining with the best locally sourced ingredients. For a bite to eat during the day, there’s Ginger & Co, named as Shropshire’s Best Independent Coffee Shop by the readers of What’s On magazine.

Transport

By Air

Shrewsbury Train Station

The towns main railway station is based between Howard Street and the A5191 road. It is a grade II listed building and supports the travel of over two million people every year.

Shrewsbury has no direct rail service to London and here the best advice is to change at Crewe. There are direct trains to Stockport, Wolverhampton, Cardiff and Chester.

By Bus

Bus services from all of the major Shropshire towns call at the town centre bus station. It is based in Raven Meadows, right in the heart of Shrewsbury and sees around 40 different routes pass through each week.
