About Shoreditch

Overview

Shoreditch sits within the London Borough of Hackney, with its most southerly point around Aldgate Station and the canal making a convenient northern extent.

Since the mid-90s, Shoreditch has been a hip and trendy part of London. It was a leader during the trend of the late nineties and post-millennium for gritty, more ‘urban’ areas becoming new fashionable hotspots in the wake of the dotcom boom and the arrival of New Media, a time when City bankers suddenly weren’t the only ones with money to burn in Central London. Sometimes being the trend setter is a good thing, other times you get overtaken by those who use your example to figure out how to do it better but, either way, Shoreditch will always have Brick Lane to help keep it fresh. Moreover, redevelopment in the south of Shoreditch in recent years is seeing an extraordinary supply of new city apartments close to the financial district.

Shoreditch sits within the London Borough of Hackney, with its most southerly point around Aldgate Station and the canal making a convenient northern extent. The eastern and western borders are harder to define, but ‘somewhere around Bethnal Green’ and ‘not much past Old Street Underground Station’ would probably suffice. It is home to Old Spitalfields Market, an astonishingly eclectic collection of stalls, shops, varying art venues and eateries, where the chain stores find themselves dotted amongst the independents, rather than the other way around.

Just a little to the east of Old Spitalfields Market is Brick Lane Market, perhaps even more diverse in its collection of stores, street entertainers, food stalls and more. And what helps to make Brick Lane extra special is the street art, as it is an area renowned for being the place where the best graffiti artists ply their trade, including the world-renowned Banksy. Situ has a good variety of serviced apartments available in Shoreditch and close to the Brick Lane area.

It should be no surprise if you are coming to Shoreditch business accommodation that there are plenty of places to shop, eat and enjoy a good night in the area. Turn most corners and you’ll find a good old English pub or a fun cocktail bar, so finding something to do in Shoreditch becomes about looking for a different experience. In a district packed with arts spaces and cool little independent cinemas, The Electric Cinema on Redchurch Street is one such place. This small single screen cinema with its plush armchairs, tables for your food and drinks and even a blanket to snuggle under, is like watching movies from the comfort of your own home but with a cinema screen and cinema quality sound. If you’re in Shoreditch on a short stay, however, it may be worth booking before you go.

Something else to check out while staying in Shoreditch is the Columbia Road Flower Market – quite a stunning sight if you’re not really prepared for it – which happens every Sunday and includes an astonishing array of flowers, houseplants, bulbs and more.

Travelling into Shoreditch, a good station to aim for is London Liverpool Street which, although technically not in the area, lies only a little over five minutes’ walk from the Old Spitalfields Market area and about 10 minutes from Shoreditch High Street. There is an Overground railway station on Shoreditch High Street, although the closest tube stations to the centre of the district are probably Old Street on the Northern Line and Liverpool Street. Situ has plenty of aparthotel options around Shoreditch and will likely have something to suit in various parts of the area, whatever the group size and requirements.
