About San Francisco

Overview

It's always felt like one of America's 'coolest' cities, immortalised by car chases across its challenging terrain. San Francisco is the hub of Northern California and popular with tourists who come to enjoy its many sights.

Back in the 1960s, San Francisco was a centre of the hippie counterculture in America at the time, but eventually became a big part of the dotcom boom, with many major tech companies still located in the area today, along with Silicon Valley situated a little over 30 miles to the southeast. Of course, go back to the 19th century and San Francisco was part of the Gold Rush. This city, it seems, is ever-evolving.

Perhaps one of the most surprising things that guests will find about San Francisco when staying in serviced apartments there, is that it’s not as big as you would think. The city itself has a population of less than 900,000, that’s just fourth in the state of California and less than San Jose to the south, but at the same time it is California’s most densely populated city, squeezed as it is onto the tip of its peninsula. The relatively small geographical size may be a good thing if you’re moving around on foot, as the city is famously hilly – a trait which has been immortalised in more than one movie car chase, 1968’s Bullit starring Steve McQueen being probably the most famous.

There are some good cheap or free attractions for travellers staying in our San Francisco aparthotels. The Golden Gate Bridge is San Francisco’s most iconic landmark. It is a toll bridge for cars but it can be traversed on foot and visitors can partake in tours of the bridge. On the other side is the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, a large area of open land with a marine mammal centre and the Bay Area Discovery Museum, which is great for kids. Taking a cable car ride is also a San Francisco must, the three remaining lines constitute a National landmark and are synonymous with experiencing the city’s steep terrain.

Another San Francisco must-see is Alcatraz Island, the former federal prison that famously hosted Al Capone. The night tours there are a spooky experience.

One of the city’s latest incarnations is as a foodie’s haven. If you are eating out while staying in short term accommodation in San Francisco, then there are a wide variety of options that are well-spaced throughout the city.  Outerlands on Judah Street, in the northeast of the city, has a cosy feel and an authentic American menu. Foreign Cinema is more centrally located, has both indoor and outdoor dining and plays movies every night. And even AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team, is on the foodie list. Its restaurant has a good menu and cooks with ingredients grown on-site.

Situ has a variety of city apartments in San Francisco. Whether you are travelling for business or in town to see the many sights that San Francisco has to offer, we have temporary housing to suit a variety of needs.
