HISTORY OF RICHMOND

Many credits the foundation of the London town to the moment the Richmond Palace was constructed in the sixteenth century. The palace though was named after an earldom of Henry VII, based in North Yorkshire. This was all after the area was actually deemed to be called ‘Shene’, up until the fourteenth century.

Besides the Richmond Palace, much of the area surrounding it was agricultural, and as you can expect Richmond Park was at the heart of this. Development did emerge though by the eighteenth century. Hunting culture grew in Richmond, and several large, important houses arose. Popularity forced the town to grow and develop. For instance, the 1770s saw the build of the Richmond Bridge, designed to connect the town centre and Twickenham across the River Thames. 

Other natural developments included the increase in shops and luxurious housing, making Richmond one of London’s higher-class locations. Growth also meant that Richmond became integrated into Greater London by the twentieth century, and eventually, formed part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, the only London borough to cover land on either side of the River Thames.
