The US state of New Jersey offers the best of both worlds – it’s next door to the bright lights of New York City and Philadelphia, whilst also having so much to offer in its own right.

New Jersey is a state in the northeastern United States. It has around 130 miles of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, while immediately to the north and northeast of the state lies New York City. The three states of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey are often referred to as the Tri-State Region or the Greater New York City Area. Philadelphia, another very large city, is also very close to some of the southwestern parts of the state.
New Jersey has a population of around nine million. The two most populous cities in the state are Newark and Jersey City, both of which are home to around 300,000 people and are both within 15 miles of downtown New York City. Perhaps the best-known city in the south of the state is Atlantic City, some 130 miles south of New York City.
There are several large international airports in the state. Once you’ve arrived at wherever you’re staying, whether it’s a 4 bed or a studio apartment in New Jersey, from there you can travel around the city on the rail or bus network. There are also flights you can take internally if you want to see the rest of the US.
New Jersey generates around 3% of the United States’ entire Gross Domestic Product. Per capita income in the state is higher than the national average, as is the proportion of people with a university degree – the state is itself home to some fine universities such as Rutgers and Montclair.
Significant industries in New Jersey include pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, financial services (especially fintech), media and film, chemicals manufacture, logistics and food and drink production.
The most recognised international corporations based in New Jersey include Prudential, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, United Airlines, JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Bayer Health Care, Campbell Soup Company, Ericsson, Amazon, Deloitte and Ernst & Young. So, while many New Jersey residents inevitably head to NYC or Philadelphia for work, many more lead prosperous working lives while employed within the state boundaries.
To further illustrate that New Jersey is a great place to do business, Broadbandnow has said it is the best state in the US for broadband connectivity. No wonder there are so many available serviced apartments in New Jersey!
Whether you enjoy short term stay or an extended period in a corporate New Jersey apartment, you’re never too far from a sense of the state’s culture, or one of the many iconic attractions.
New Jersey has an incredible musical heritage. You can learn all about Ol’ Blue Eyes (Frank Sinatra) at the Historical Museum in his hometown of Hoboken, where there’s also a Sinatra Walking Tour. One of Bruce Springsteen’s albums is ‘Greetings from Asbury Park’, and in the town of Asbury Park, you can take in a concert at the impressive Convention Hall. Springsteen played here in his formative years, and still rehearses here, even if he now tends to play much larger venues. Multi-million selling rock band Bon Jovi also hail from New Jersey. In Red Bank, you can eat at the JBJ Soul Kitchen, a community ‘pay what you can afford’ restaurant founded by Jon Bon Jovi and his wife. If you’re in town at the right time of year, make sure you sample the atmosphere of the Trenton Punk Rock Flea Market, where vendors sell old vinyl and the best street fashion, while live music blares out.
Undoubtedly one of the most unusual attractions in the state capital of Trenton is the Grounds for the Sculpture art museum. You’ll realise this is no ordinary sculpture garden when you see the 20-feet high figure of King Lear!
When you want to forget that you’re in the country’s most densely populated state, head for the 800,000-acre forest that is the beguiling Pinelands. Atlantic City, on the other hand, is also home to some of the best beaches anywhere in the northern US. Almost every large town or city in the state will also have an extensive choice of international restaurants. However, for some of the best Spanish and Portuguese cuisine, head to the Ironbound district of Newark.
During the summer months, there’s also a bewildering array of global cuisine on offer from the street food vendors at Pier 13 in Hoboken. Make sure you sample some of the great food, craft beer and cocktails, whilst enjoying the live music, and hopefully also seeing the sun go down on the Hudson River, with the Manhattan skyline opposite.

Secaucus Junction and Newark are also busy interchange stations, where you can change when travelling from other parts of the state into New York. Newark’s main station, also known as Penn, is also a stop on the Newark Light Rail system, where trains run every few minutes between 5 am and 1 am daily.
A 24-hour service known as the AirTrain connects Liberty Airport with NYC Penn station. In the south of the state, there is a regular rail service between Atlantic City and Philadelphia.
Most areas of the state have frequent bus services to either Port Authority Bus Terminal or George Washington Bridge Bus Station in New York.
Newark also has bus services to other US cities, including Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Atlanta.
