Mumbai is located on the west coast of India in the province of Maharashtra, which it is the state capital. The city was known as Bombay until 1995.
Mumbai is the largest city in India – the city itself has a population of around 12.5 million. Approximately 18.5 million people live in Mumbai’s metropolitan area.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, formerly known as Sahar Airport, is the largest airport serving the Mumbai area. It’s located around 15 miles north of the city centre.
From here you can fly to more than 60 destinations. These include European cities such as London (Heathrow), Amsterdam, and Paris. Flights to Mumbai are also available from Dubai, New York, Bangkok, and Tokyo. There’s also a wide range of internal destinations including Bengaluru, New Delhi, Kolkata, and Nagpur.
The Mumbai Suburban Railway has nine lines traversing the city and its surrounding areas. Trains on these lines run almost 24 hours per day and operate as frequently as every five minutes. Some of the trains have as many as 15 carriages. Overcrowding means that many business visitors opt for a first-class carriage, which costs around 10 times the second-class fare.
Vile Parle Station is just over a mile from the airport, and you can take a bus or taxi from the terminal to connect with the train.
Other cities connected by rail to Mumbai include Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Pune, Nagpur, and New Delhi, although sometimes there might only be one or two trains per day. The journey to New Delhi takes between 17 and 30 hours, depending on the route you take.
The twelve-mile monorail line runs through the city and connects to suburban railway stations at Lower Parel, Curry Road, Dadar, and Wadala. There’s usually a train every 15 minutes.
The main railway stations include Mumbai Central and the incredible Gothic structure of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (the same name as the city airport, although it’s not the same location).
The red double-decker buses serve almost every area of the city and its suburbs. There are also long-distance bus services to Pune, Indore, and Bengaluru.
