About Hove

Overview

If you’re staying in a Hove aparthotel or property, you will also find yourself able to access an excellent bus service which can be monitored live via the internet and that has regular service running into Brighton.

Hove in East Sussex is the smaller neighbour of the well-known seaside resort of Brighton. Since 1997, Brighton and Hove have come under one unitary authority and, since 2001, have collectively been known as the city of ‘Brighton and Hove’. Indeed, as you travel along the seafront past the British Airways 360 and the wealth of valuable seafront property, it can be a little hard for those staying in Hove serviced apartments to be sure where Brighton ends and Hove begins. However, once you get into the actual centre of town it becomes easier to see exactly what Hove is – a leafy and – slightly – gentler alternative to the crazy, eclectic mix that is Brighton.

And yes, Hove is a more affordable alternative to Brighton, too, although that didn’t stop the likes of YouTube star Zoella having once owned a home there. To be honest, the stereotypes that have long separated the two are becoming a little less distinct with Hove now becoming as appealing as Brighton for the young people moving to the city.

When you’re talking about what to do while on a short stay in Hove, it’s still worth mentioning the seafront first.  Beginning around Hove Lawns and continuing west to Hove Lagoon, near Portslade, this end of the seafront has the distinct advantage of being quieter than much of the beach area to the east. Gorgeous and individually painted beach huts line the wide promenade and there are a number of cafes dotted along the front, all within sight of the majestic decaying remains of Brighton’s West Pier and the new British Airways 360. The Lagoon Water Sports Centre offers a variety of activities, including windsurfing, wakeboarding and sailing.

Hove town centre itself follows Brighton’s example of a combination of high street names and individual, often quirky, boutique-style shops, mixed in with pavement cafes spread across pedestrianised areas. However, if you’re staying in Hove accommodation, you will quickly come to appreciate that the main business district here, though busy, doesn’t suffer the incredible crush that can often be the case in Brighton. And, whether your city apartment in Hove is close to the seafront or further back, you can find a pleasant environment with enjoyable – often suburban – surroundings and open areas such as Hove Park, Hove Recreation Ground and Hove Green Park, which is the location for the Brighton Open Air Theatre.

Hove also has its own museum and art gallery, which is a family friendly day out with plenty of history and art on display, with historical collections of varying types including toys and cinema-related items. And, for those days when a dip in the sea just isn’t going to happen, the King Alfred sports Centre at the front on the Kingsway has a swimming pool, fitness centre and a sports hall with various activities.

Just as Brighton is within easy reach of London and other important areas, Hove is just as well-connected with its main train station operating GWR, Southern and Thameslink services. If you’re staying in a Hove aparthotel or property, you will also find yourself able to access an excellent bus service which can be monitored live via the internet and that has regular service running into Brighton.
