Located in the north of Hertfordshire, Hitchin is a market town close to the A1(M) and not far from Stevenage and Luton.  Nowadays a small-to-moderate size town of about 33,000 people, Hitchin has a rich and long-running history. It was likely once a point on the Ickneild Way, one of the oldest known trackways of pre-historic Britain, it’s original route can still be traced and it pre-dates Roman arrival in Britain. There are thought to be references to Hitchin as a settlement in the 7^th century, although its official existence can be traced to the 8^th century and this still makes it one of England’s oldest towns.

Business travellers coming to serviced apartments in Hitchin today will find it a popular commuting town, close to the beauty of the Barton Hills Nature Reserve.  The commuter service from Hitchin Railway Station can take those staying in business accommodation into London Kings Cross in as little as half an hour, while travelling into London via the A1(M) by car takes around an hour. Hitchin is also about seven miles northeast of London Luton Airport and just under 22 miles from London Stanstead Airport, giving it excellent international connections.

While you’re on a short stay in Hitchin you will find that, despite its long history, time hasn’t stood still in the town. Neither does Hitchin seem particularly limited by its relatively small size, so that modern developments have brought big name stores into the town. Add to that the provision of plenty of new office space and it can be seen that Hitchin, more than just a commuter town, is a draw for business in itself. And, of course, being a historical market town, Hitchin’s markets give those on a self-catering stay a different sort of shopping experience on a regular basis. The main town market is open for business every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, while there is an Antiques and Collectors Market each Friday and a car boot sale and general market on a Sunday. Plenty to choose from!

Although London is close enough to enjoy the odd night out, you may find yourself choosing to stay in Hitchin as the town’s many traditional pubs are consistently being complemented by new offerings, including some of the popular chain bars like Pitcher & Piano. The town also has two excellent theatres of note, Queen Mother Theatre just at the edge of the centre, and the smaller Market Theatre on Sun Street.  The town is also home to the North Hertfordshire Museum, which includes displays on natural history and art.

If you are happy to take a short drive, there are plenty more excellent attractions within a short drive of Hitchin. Woburn Safari is perhaps the most notable of these, about a 17-mile drive from the town it’s usually about a 30-minute journey. Woburn Abbey is also close to the safari park and it may be possible to fit both into a single day’s adventuring.
