Hatfield in Hertfordshire has many celebrity connections and is becoming an ever-more popular commuter town, lying as it does just off the A1(M) and only about five miles north of Junction 23 of the M25. Direct trains into London’s Kings Cross take just over 20 minutes from the central train station.

Aside from its new status as a popular commuter spot, the town is most well-known for Hatfield House, a stately home with historical royal connections to Elizabeth I, and also for its involvement in the British aerospace industry. Aircraft manufacturers like De Havilland and Hawker Siddeley operated from Hatfield’s aerodrome and famous fighter aircraft like the Mosquito and the Vampire jet were developed and produced there. When on a short stay in Hatfield, you will find that the town has quite a unique flavour, a combination of an ‘Olde English’ village feel and remnants of the New Town project when Hatfield, along with nearby towns such as Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City, came under the post-WWII act, something which can be visibly witnessed in the examples of modernist architecture still there.

It boasts a large indoor shopping centre in The Galleria on the prestigiously named Comet Way – yes, it’s those aircraft again. As well as an enormous array of shops and brands, there is a nine-screen cinema there, as well as an array of eateries from fast food outlets to a Chiquito Mexican restaurant and an oriental buffet. However, if you’re after something a little more ‘fine dining’, there are options in the centre of town and some lovely pubs in the Great North Road area just near the train station. If you’re more of an eating-in type, there are large Asda and Tesco stores either side of the town centre, as well as smaller Co-op and Iceland stores in the middle.

For parks and places to visit, you can’t beat Hatfield Park and Hatfield House, which are easily within walking distance of the centre, while neighbouring Welwyn Garden City – disclaimer: not really a city – is less than three miles away and just one stop on the train, which may also be worth a visit.
