About Hastings

Overview

Hastings is a traditional seaside resort of arcades and funfairs that is rapidly transforming itself into a cultural hotspot, based around its history, its art galleries, and its festivals and events.

Why Choose Serviced Apartments in Hastings?

Serviced apartments are becoming an increasingly popular accommodation choice for business travellers. Even a one-bedroom apartment is typically much larger than a room in a high-end hotel in Hastings, while the rental price is likely to be lower. It’s possible to stay in a serviced apartment in Hastings within walking distance of Hastings town centre close to all the amenities, or in a quieter location away from the centre.

With cooking, dining, and laundry facilities, it’s also much easier to turn your Hastings self-catering apartment into a real ‘home-from-home’. If you don’t fancy cooking a meal in the apartment, then there’s likely to be a restaurant close by, especially if you’re close to the town centre. At many apartments, housekeeping, and laundry services are likely to be available, and with free Wifi and a smart TV, you really have everything you need for a productive and relaxing stay.

Selecting a Situ serviced apartment in Hastings will also make it easier to hold business meetings, or to host family and friends. The apartment is likely to have a dining table or somewhere else that’s convenient for a meeting. You can cook for your guests as well, so choosing self-catering accommodation definitely makes sense.

You can also browse our selection of Hastings luxury accommodation: perhaps find an apartment in a period setting or one with amazing sea views. Wherever you choose to stay, you can be sure that staying in one of our serviced apartments in Hastings will give you the privacy, space, and flexibility for your Hastings holiday or business trip.

Where is Hastings?

Hastings is on England’s south coast, in the county of East Sussex. It’s fifty-four miles south of London, while also being thirty-one miles east of Brighton, which is the largest city in Sussex. The population of Hastings is approximately 90,000.

Hastings has regular transport connections to London and Brighton, to the Eurostar at Ashford and to Gatwick Airport. However, many Hastonians both live and work in the town, or work in the immediate surrounding areas such as Rye, Eastbourne, and Bexhill.

The seafront here is dominated by Hastings pier. However, from 2008 to 2016, the pier was a sad sight — not only was it closed throughout this period, but for most of this time it was a blackened shell, following several fires. Today, things couldn't be more different. This restored landmark won the Royal Institute of British Architects’ Stirling Prize and now this award-winning pier plays host to the Pavilion Restaurant, as well as vintage fairs, exhibitions, family-friendly events, and live music.

Things to Do in Hastings

Hastings will be forever associated with the skirmish that took place on the outskirts of the town almost a thousand years ago, and which had profound consequences for British history. It’s no surprise that the local tourist board markets the area as ‘1066 Country’. Today, the battlefield site is preserved by English Heritage. Hastings Castle, built by William the Conqueror, overlooks the town and has wonderful views over Sussex.

There’s also plenty of historical interest in Hastings Old Town. This is a bohemian district of narrow lanes, half-timbered cottages, and townhouses of medieval, Tudor, and Georgian buildings located just to the east of the modern resort. Hastings High Street is packed with cafés and independent retailers and you can spend an enjoyable afternoon visiting the wide variety of unique shops here.

Located in the Old Town, the Hastings Contemporary, formerly known as The Jerwood, is a world-class modern art gallery. Dame Paula Rego, Gillian Ayres, Maggi Hambling, Mark Wallinger, Sir Quentin Blake, and Sarah Lucas are just some of the artists who have exhibited here.

Another must-visit for amazing views over Hasting is the East Hill Cliff Funicular Railway, a cable-car railway that ascends and descends the cliffs. It originally opened in 1902 and is the steepest funicular railway in the country. The West Hill Lift is a second funicular railway taking visitors up the West Hill. Again, there are spectacular views at the top.

The Fisherman's Huts in the Old Town are the starting point for the main parade during Hastings’ annual ‘Jack in the Green’ Festival. Many communities in the UK hold some form of Green Man celebration for May Day, but few do it on the scale of Hastings. The festival lasts for four days, the costumes are truly extraordinary, and Jack has to be ‘murdered’ in order to release the spirit of spring!

The Old Town is also where you will find some of the best restaurants, producing menus based on local produce as well as seafood.

St Leonards-on-Sea is to the west of Hastings, was established as an elegant town in the nineteenth century, and became a popular seaside resort. It has extended over the years but the old town can still be found at the centre.

There are a number of spots that are suitable for dog walk, some of the beaches are dog-friendly and Hastings Country Parks is likewise a popular destination. Of course there are many more beautiful walks in the surrounding East Sussex countryside. Browse our accommodation choices to find pet-friendly serviced apartments in Hastings.

Business and Economy in Hastings

In addition to the tourist trade, some of the biggest industries in the Hastings area are healthcare, retail, and high-tech manufacturing. There is an increasing number of small and medium-sized businesses in the creative and technology sectors starting up in the town, often attracted to Hastings by the availability of low-cost commercial spaces. The Hastings and Rye area has a higher number of economically active individuals compared to the national average.

Business people in the Hastings area might like to look at the websites of these organisations to see what support they could offer:
- Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce, which seeks to raise the profile of members’ businesses, provide networking opportunities, and lobby Members of Parliament and other decision-makers.
- BNI Hastings, where members seek to refer business to one another.
- Business Over Breakfast (BoB) Club Hastings & Rother, which provides structured networking opportunities where all visitors are given 60-90 seconds at each meeting to promote their business. One member is then given 10 minutes to carry out a more comprehensive 'Showcase' presentation.

But whatever brings you to this vibrant and interesting town, you can be sure that choosing one of Situ’s serviced apartments in Hastings will help you get the most out of your stay.
