Greenwich in southeast London is probably most well-known for Greenwich Mean Time and the Greenwich Meridian, as well as having a significant place in British Maritime History. Perhaps less well-known is the fact that it was the site of a royal palace for about 200 years and was the birthplace of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Greenwich is a popular area of London along the south bank of the Thames and still a big draw for tourists when they are exploring the English capital. Its proximity to the business and financial district of the Isle of Dogs, the O2 Arena and London City Airport all add up to make Greenwich a good site for city apartments.
As with some other areas of London, Greenwich has one or two enduring iconic sites. If you are approaching it by boat – and it’s well worth trying that out at some point during a short stay in Greenwich – probably the first thing you will notice are the familiar twin domes of the Old Royal Naval College, which appeared as a filming location during the climactic scenes of Marvel’s Thor: Dark World. And, pretty much right next to that, there rises the other familiar sight of the mast of the Cutty Sark, a tea clipper constructed in 1869 and now afforded a status equivalent to that of a Grade I listed building, this stunning old sailing ship is a popular destination for visitors.
A little less ostentatiously, another smaller dome sits next to the Cutty Sark. This is the entrance to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel; opened in 1902, it was at the time a marvel in engineering and runs for over 1200 feet under the Thames to connect Greenwich to the Isle of Dogs. Recently refurbished, it is still open today and those staying in Greenwich serviced apartments could use it as a means to reach businesses located on the other side of the river.

The National Maritime Museum sits behind the University of Greenwich and the vast expanse of Greenwich Park, with the Royal Observatory, lies just beyond that. The grounds of the Old Royal Naval College are home to an excellent gastro- dining pub, The Old Brewery, which is a popular destination close to the water.
Of course, Greenwich is more than just the area around the naval college and Cutty Sark, and guests staying in business accommodation in Greenwich may find themselves closer to the ‘high street’ area on the A206 Trafalgar Road, which has smaller supermarkets and is where you will find The Greenwich Centre, which has swimming pools and gym facilities. Greenwich Shopping Park is located over in North Greenwich and has an enormous range of retailers, a large supermarket and some chain eateries. It also has two seminars, one close to Greenwich Shopping Park is an Odeon IMAX, while there is a Picturehouse closer to the main area.
There are a number of options for getting around London if you are staying in an aparthotel in Greenwich. The train station runs Thameslink and southeastern services, with trains running into London Cannon Street. There is also a DLR station next door. Greenwich Pier runs London Riverboat services, a great way to see some of the city while getting about, and North Greenwich is served by the London Underground’s Jubilee Line.
