Where is Crawley?

Crawley is the largest town in Sussex (with the borough also being named Crawley as well) and sits midway between London and Brighton. The town covers an area of just over 17 square miles, making it the largest inland town in West Sussex. It has 14 different and diverse neighbourhoods with a total population of around 112,500. Much of the borough sits within the county of Sussex, but a small northern portion also falls within the county of Surrey.

Crawley has excellent transport access with many direct routes to nearby cities. It takes as little as 49 minutes to reach London by car and under 30 minutes to drive to Brighton. Dover is a drive of one hour and twenty-one minutes, while Horsham is just thirteen minutes away by car. It’s no surprise then that the town is in the top 20% of districts nationally for connectivity. Crawley is skirted by the M23, while the A23 runs directly through it.

Transport

By Air

Gatwick Airport is just three miles and a ten-minute drive away, or five minutes by train. Stansted, Luton, and Heathrow are also accessible from Crawley. By train, it takes up to two hours to reach all other airports.

Travelling by car is slightly quicker: to Heathrow, it takes as little as 45 minutes and about 1 hour 30 minutes to Stansted and Heathrow.

By Train

Crawley has three main railway stations — Crawley Station, Gatwick Airport, and Three Bridges. Crawley Station is operated by Southend and is the last stop on the Arun Valley line before joining the Brighton Main Line. It is only 30 miles from London Bridge and it takes just under 40 minutes to get there.

The station has two platforms with regular daily train times. Rail travel south is to Brighton (32 minutes) and Horsham (8 minutes). Eastwards to Devon is 2 hours, 29 minutes.

By Bus

The main bus operator In Crawley is Metrobus. The Fastway service operates in Crawley, Gatwick and Horley. The Gatwick service runs 24 hours and takes around 20 minutes. Metrobus to Brighton takes around 70 minutes. National Express buses run from Crawley Station and Gatwick Airport.
