In the northwest of London, Colindale is located within the Borough of Barnet, around eight miles from Charing Cross. It sits in a triangle with Edgeware in the north, Harrow in the west, and Brent Cross in the east. Colindale is in Zone 4 for Transport for London (TfL).
Colindale is undergoing massive improvement work as part of the wider ‘Delivering for Barnet’ regeneration programme. It means that around 10,000 new homes have already been built in Colindale over the past decade and there are many more to come by 2030 (more than any other borough in Greater London, in fact).
Some of the new housing developments have gone up on land at the aerodrome while others are on the site of the former Colindale library, shopping centre, and hospital. The housing is in addition to park improvements and improved transport: two new stations have been built recently, one of which is Crossrail.
A new council office is at the heart of the borough of Colindale, and has been joined by the relocation of Barnet and Southgate College (which sits opposite). This is to become the area’s new Civic Square.
The nearby Hendon aerodrome – now geographically split from Colindale by the M1 motorway – is the site of a modern visitor centre at the Royal Air Force (RAF) Museum, and is certain to bring in thousands of tourists to the area every year.
Other big institutions based here include Public Health England's Centre for Infections (which has played a major role during the coronavirus epidemic) and the Peel Centre. The latter is also known as Hendon Police College, although it now no longer has a residential unit.
The area has plenty of nearby green open spaces for evening strolls once you’ve finished work. Colindale Park is the closest for commuters, being opposite the Colindale tube station, while Rushgrove Park has plenty of greenery, as well as tennis and basketball courts.
Colindale is great for shopping – especially for high street brands – with Brent Cross Shopping Centre on the doorstep. There are more than 100 retail outlets here so it’s easy to spend an entire morning or afternoon shopping.
The recently-upgraded Royal Air Force Museum is worth a visit. Test your flying skills, sit inside a simulated cockpit, and visit the historic hangars. There are five exhibitions with over a hundred full-size planes. There are also more than 40 experiments to try out at the fascinating Aeronauts Interactive Centre.

For Luton Airport, Mill Hill Broadway railway station has a connection to Luton that takes 25 minutes. By bus it’s only 49 minutes. London City Airport is the next closest to Colindale and is 55 minutes by train.
Heathrow is an hour-long journey away via car or taxi. You will need to be at Heathrow Terminal 5 for routes to-and-from Colindale. Gatwick Airport is 63 minutes by train and Stansted 69 minutes.
You can get a train in Barnet at Mill Hill Broadway Railway Station. This is 14 minutes by bus (303) from Colindale or a 32-minute walk. From Mill Hill Station you can get a train to Kings Cross in just under 1.5 hours. Marylebone is just over an hour and forty minutes, while Euston Station is about two hours away.
Colindale underground station is on Colindale Avenue and lies on the Northern Line. It passes through key Central London areas such as Chalk Farm and Camden Town (20 minutes), King’s Cross and St. Pancras International train station (22 minutes).
