Sitting on the River Roding on the north-east boundary of London, the market town of Chigwell is based in the rural district of Epping Forest. Most of the town is in the county of Essex in the East of England, although the western and southern borders of the town come under the control of the London Borough of Redbridge.
Chigwell – along with Loughton and Buckhurst Hill – is part of the ‘golden triangle’ of wealthy towns in Epping Forest. There are 24 parishes in total in the district, of which Chigwell the third largest.

Chigwell is just five minutes’ drive from the M11 and around ten minutes from the M25. It’s possible to access the A12 and the North Circular within five minutes as well. Cambridge is fifty-two miles from Chigwell via the M11 and is approximately an hour’s drive. Oxford is seventy minutes away via the M40, with a distance time of an hour-and-a-half. Reading is sixty-nine miles via the M25 and is about an hour and twenty-four minutes by car.
Chigwell’s location between the two international economic powerhouses of London and Cambridge offers the town plenty of economic activity and diversity. The largest employment areas in the Epping Forest district include construction, finance, insurance, the digital and creative industries, care, advanced manufacturing, and logistics. Of those, construction is the biggest, with the most employees and the most individual businesses. More than 90 per cent of Epping Forest is Green Belt land and, not surprisingly, tourism is on the rise.

City Airport is the nearest to Chigwell at just 22 minutes by car and 56 minutes by train. London Stansted Airport is 26 miles away and a drive of 33 minutes via the M11. It’s 1 hour and 46 minutes by bus to Ilford, train to Stratford then National Express coach. By bus to Stratford then train it’s just over an hour-and-a-half.
Heathrow Airport is 51 minutes by car and an hour-and-a-half by train. Gatwick is a similar travel time away by train and a drive of 1 hour and 6 minutes. Luton is the furthest Airport from Chigwell, taking just over an hour by train and subway but only 46 minutes by car.
Cambridge is 2 hours and 9 minutes by train and Reading slight longer at 2 hours and 55 minutes. Oxford is 2 hours 7 minutes via the subway to Woodford and Lancaster Gate station, then by train from London Paddington.
On the Underground, Chigwell is on the Central Line into London, in Zone 4. It’s 26 minutes to Liverpool Street and 36 minutes to Oxford Circus. Trains run regularly, every 15 minutes.
The Line 167 bus runs to Ilford every half an hour and takes 28 minutes. From there it’s possible to get a train into London Liverpool Street (trains take 17 minutes and run every 10 minutes).
