The area now known as Canary Wharf was originally part of the West India Docks, which opened in 1802. They were the centre of London’s trading and shipping industry during the height of the British Empire and employed thousands of people at their peak during the 19th century.
However, after World War II, technological advancements in shipping made the docks obsolete. The larger container ships required deeper waters so the city-based docks declined in favour of larger ports, such as Tilbury, downriver from London.
The West India Docks officially closed in 1980, leaving behind abandoned warehouses, high unemployment, and economic stagnation in the area.
In 1981 The London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) was established by the UK government to regenerate the area. The LDDC focused on improving infrastructure and attracting investment to transform the Docklands into a business hub.
Construction began in 1988 and Canary Wharf's first buildings were completed in 1991. But it wasn’t all plain sailing (excuse the pun) because the early 1990s recession led to high vacancy rates and the project seemed doomed. Fortunately, by the mid-1990s the project attracted major investors and improved transport links sparked renewed interest.
By the start of the 21st Century Canary Wharf was one of the world's leading financial districts. Major banks established their headquarters or significant offices there. The area has evolved into a mixed-use district, with luxury residential developments and retail malls sitting alongside, and under, the iconic buildings.
