About Camden

Overview

Famous for its markets and live entertainment, Camden is one of London's trendier districts. Its famed as a top London shopping area, but it also has plenty more to offer as a travel destination. Camden has been a residential area since the 1790s. Yet, it was not until 60 years later that the main parts of the town were fully constructed. In April 1965, the London Borough of Camden replaced the former boroughs of Hampstead, Holborn, and St Pancras. Now though Camden is the sixth-most densely populated English district and is widely-known for its vast ethnic diversity.

The town only become a busy part of London after the development of the Grand Union Canal and the improved railway system. The Grand Union Canal is the longest in the UK, stretching to 137 miles from London to Birmingham. Sourcing from this canal is Regent’s Canal, which runs through the heart of Camden and its markets. In 1974 Camden welcomed its first diverse and colourful traders and the rest is history.

Camden Road Railway Station

Operated by London Overground, Camden Road, is located on the corner of Royal College Street.

This station is not to be confused with Camden Town Station, which is a London Underground station 450 metres to the southwest of this station.

Camden Town Tube Station

This station is a major junction for the Northern line and one of the busiest stations on the London Underground network.
