Where is Budapest?

Budapest is the capital city of Hungary, a landlocked country based in central Europe. The city is also centrally located in Hungary and bisected by the River Danube. Around 1.7 million people live there, making it easily the most populated city in the country, ahead of Debrecen (200,000) and Szeged (160,000). Budapest is not the largest city in Europe, covering around 200 square miles of land.

Being the main hub of activity and business in the country, Budapest was every easily reachable and accessible. The Danube River connects with the Slovakian border around 30 miles away from the Budapest city centre, whilst the M0 motorway, a ring road that encircles the city, connects to several European motorway routes which run all over Hungary. The ring road spans right around the city’s centrepiece, the Hungarian Parliament Building.

To reach the city from another country expats will most likely need to arrive via Budapest Airport. It’s based along the M4 and on the south-eastern edge of the city. City centre Budapest apartments are a forty-five-minute drive from the airport, ideal for corporates visiting the city for a short space of time.

Expat Life in Budapest

The Budapest economy is powered most by IT, pharmaceutical, food & drink, retail and automotive industries. Hungary's economic wellbeing essentially rests in the hands of the successes of these local industries, with Budapest contributing towards around 40% of the country's income and 18% of the national population. It registers an average of £90 billion in GDP each year and is often dubbed one of the fastest developing city economies in the world, so businesses inevitably see Budapest as an attractive location for business.

Moreover, the city welcomes almost 5 million visitors each year too. This is thanks to the city's fantastic location in the heart of Europe. Businesses relocate here knowing that Budapest is based within a landlocked state, which neighbours seven other countries. The city's access to such a unique market makes the mind up of many corporates debating whether to stay long term in a luxury serviced apartment in Budapest.

However, whilst it may all sound great, for expats the advice is clear; understand and embrace the culture. With there being such a diverse market and variety of businesses and people in the city, it is important for new Budapest businesses to initially have an understanding of what the city is all about. This means creating personal relationships, learning more about the history and culture or finding a gap in the market. Ultimately, the key to reaping the benefits of what Budapest offers is to do your homework beforehand.

Living in Budapest

By now you may be convinced that corporate aparthotels in Bucharest are the place to stay, and the city has really encouraging traits as a place to do business, but what is it like to live in the Hungarian capital?

Well, the city is beautiful and full of wonderful attractions which are definitely worth visiting. For instance, the heart of Budapest is home to the country main landmark, the Hungarian Parliament Building. The building is magnificent, whilst on the other side of the beautiful Danube River is the Buda Castle, a one-of-a-kind palace that is rightly valued as a World Heritage Site. Other wonderful structures include the State Opera House, St. Stephen's Basilica, the Fisherman Bastion fortress and the Chain Bridge.

It's not all about sightseeing though when visiting Budapest. There's also the Central Market Hall which you could stroll around or the Széchenyi Thermal Bath where anyone can take a relaxing dip. For those wanting lovely scenery and backdrops, visit either the City Park and its Vajdahunyad Castle or the overlooking  Gellért Hill. As well as a great array of attractions, the city is blessed with pretty good weather all year round too. The summers in Budapest are lovely, with restaurants, bars, cafés and parks bustling and full of high spirits and within walking distance of each other.

All of this does come at a cost though. Budapest is not the cheapest place to live in Europe, and the locals are less fluent in languages that are not their native language. Both these aspects can make it tricky to initially blend into local society, but after spending some time in long term furnished apartments in Budapest, anyone can get to grips with it.

Budapest Metro

The Budapest Metro is the oldest of its kind still operating in Europe. Only the London Underground is older, with the first underground line in Budapest opening in the 1890s. There are four metro lines in operation, running in all directions around the city centre and across the Danube River.

The metro lines are colour-coded as such;
M1: Yellow – City centre heading northeast.

M4: Green – Southwest heading northeast.

Liszt Ferenc International Airport (BUD)

Either a shared airport minibus or the appointed cab company, Főtaxi, can be used to travel between terminals and to-and-from the airport. Terminal 1 is also connected to the city centre via rail. The 100E and 200E are the two bus lines that create airport transfers with the city centre Budapest apartments.

Budapest Keleti Train Station

This station is the largest amongst the three stations in Budapest and is located only two miles from the city centre.

Consisting of eighteen platforms, this station is ideal for both varied external and domestic journeys within Budapest. Constructed in the between 1881 and 1884, Keleti station was considered one of the most modern railway stations in Europe.

Trams

Budapest has a great variety of tram routes throughout the city which run alongside the riverfront and on the Grand Boulevard.

The bus station can be accessed by the M3 Metro line. The bus transport system consists of 264 bus lines which include 40 routes that are in service throughout the night.
