Tips for navigating airports like a pro
Before you leave home
- Check your flight status: Always confirm your flight details before heading to the airport – don’t get caught out by delays or cancellations!
- Pack smart: Use a checklist to ensure you’ve packed all the essentials, keeping in mind liquid restrictions and carry-on limits. Rules can vary, so check them on the airport/ airline’s website.
- Travel documents: Keep your passport, boarding pass, and any necessary visas in an easily accessible place. This will stop you from holding up any queues while having to dig through your bag!
Getting to the airport
- Plan your journey: Allow plenty of extra time for traffic or public transport delays. It’s best to arrive at least two hours before international journeys, and an hour and a half before domestic flights.
- Airport parking: If driving, pre-book parking to save time. If possible, use public transport or have someone drop you off – parking can be costly (and a bit stressful)!
- Drop-off points: Know where your airline’s drop-off points are to avoid last-minute confusion. Knowing your route will give you peace of mind. Check the airport’s website for this information.
At the airport
- Hold luggage: Not checking a bag? Depending on your airline you may be able to check in online the day before your flight and bypass the counter on the day.
- Security checks: Wear slip-on shoes, and keep laptops and liquids ready for inspection. This will get you through the checks a lot faster. Socks are also a good idea if you have to take your shoes off!
- Airport lounge access: Utilise business lounges for a quieter, more comfortable waiting experience. You’ll be grateful for this at busier airports.
- Gate information: Keep an eye on gate changes and boarding times. There will be departure screens throughout the airport, check every 15 minutes or so. And make sure you know how far away your gate is!
On the flight
- In-flight essentials: Noise-cancelling headphones, a neck pillow, and a good book can make your flight more pleasant. A power bank in your carry-on can also be a lifesaver, as well as chewing gum for when your ears pop!
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid too much caffeine or alcohol, this will help ease any jet lag symptoms.
- Productive time: Use the flight to catch up on work or relax and recharge for your meetings.
Arrival tips
- Baggage claim: Use distinctive luggage tags to spot your bags quickly, something unique you can easily spot from a distance.
- Transportation: Pre-arrange airport transfers to your accommodation and research the airport to see where the pick-up locations are.
- Confused?: If you get a bit lost or have any questions, ask a member of airport staff – they’ll be able to help.
