The town gets its name from the River Stort, which runs through it. ‘Bishop’ was added as a prefix back in the 11th century when Stortford was sold to the Bishop of London.

Television’s Channel 4 once graded the town seventh in a list of best places to live in the UK, and Bishop’s Stortford does seem to have a lot going for it.
There is a state-of-the-art cultural centre, known as The Rhodes Arts Complex, which boasts a much-loved 300-seat theatre. It also has a cinema (which shows old movies), a museum, and a dance studio.
The twice-weekly markets are popular, with the farmers’ market being held monthly. The town also has independent cafés, bars, and restaurants. There are also old pubs, and venues with live music.
Many high-street stores can be found in the town’s indoor shopping centre. There is also a wealth of independent shops, some of which have been around for more than a century. One shop, selling haberdashery and fabrics, first opened its doors in 1891. A local bookshop was established even earlier, in 1865. The record-breaker is a men’s clothing store, which has been selling to the well-dressed gentleman since 1601.
Outdoors lovers will enjoy spending time at Sworder’s Field and Castle Gardens, where there are two skate parks, tennis courts, and a paddling pool. Southern Country Park has twenty-three hectares of green space to play and picnic on. There’s also a good fishing spot.
Those interested in history can visit the Church of St Michael. Both the church and Waytemore Castle are Grade I-listed. Bishop’s Stortford also contains some impressive Tudor houses.

Stansted Airport is an eight-minute drive from Bishop’s Stortford via the A120. The bus is fifteen minutes, and the train takes ten minutes. London City Airport is only a thirty-eight minute drive, while Luton Airport is just under an hour away by car. You can also take the train to both airports.
Bishop’s Stortford station is located to the southeast of the town centre. The West Anglia line provides direct rail services to London’s Liverpool Street and Cambridge.
Buses drive hourly to Sawbridgeworth, Harlow, Saffron Walden, and Stansted. Commuters can catch a less frequent service (every two to three hours) to Hertford and Letchworth, Hitchin and Stevenage.
The Stortford Shuttle is a community bus service going to Thorley, Havers, Parsonage, the Herts and Essex Hospital, and the town centre. It operates weekdays from 8am to 3pm.
There are coach services to Stansted, Luton, Gatwick, and Heathrow airports. They are also services to East Anglia, Brighton; and via Cambridge to the Midlands and the North.
