Where is Alabama?

Alabama is in the southeast of the United States, bordered by the states of Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida, while also having a small coastline on the Gulf of Mexico.

Alabama has a population of approximately 4.9 million. The four largest cities all house around 200,000 people. These are Huntsville in the far north, Birmingham in the northern central area of the state, Mobile on the south coast, and Montgomery (the state capital) in the southern central part of the state.

Alabama is the 30th largest state in the US, putting it somewhere in the middle in this respect. It’s approximately 330 miles from the state’s northern border with Tennessee to the Gulf coast in the south. The state is around 190 miles from the western border with Mississippi to the Georgia state line in the east.

There are several airports, which serve many of the major cities in the US. To get to Alabama from overseas, you should expect to have to change planes. The state’s rail and bus network will help you travel once you are here.

Things to Do in Alabama

Alabama is synonymous with Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement. The Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham is now a museum dedicated to the civil rights struggle. In nearby Kelly Ingram Park, you can see impressive statues of Martin Luther King, Fred Shuttlesworth, and other leading figures in the movement. If you’re visiting Montgomery, the best place there to learn about the civil rights movement is the Rosa Parks Museum.

You don’t need to head for Houston in Texas to find a superb museum dedicated to the US space race, as there’s one right here in Alabama – the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville.

Alabama has no shortage of great places to eat, from authentic southern soul food to French and Italian restaurants.

Situ serviced apartments in Alabama all come with a fully-equipped kitchen, so you can also choose to cook with local ingredients if you'd prefer a quiet night in.

Transport

By Air

The largest airport in the state is Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Despite the name, it only serves other US cities, with direct flights to Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami, New York, and Washington, amongst others.

All of these destinations, with the exception of Miami and New York, are also served by flights from Huntsville International Airport.

If you are flying into Alabama from overseas, you should expect to change planes at another US airport.

By Rail

Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Anniston all have stations on the Crescent route between New York and New Orleans, where one train operates each way on a daily basis. This route also goes via Atlanta and Washington.

The six major rail hubs in the state are Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Mobile, Montgomery, and Huntsville. For example, there’s one train from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa on most weekdays, as there is from Tuscaloosa to Anniston.

Most of these cities also have connections to the major cities in the northeast of the US, although it might take as much as 24 hours to get there.

By Bus

Most of the major cities have frequent services from suburban areas to downtown areas that operate until late in the evening. Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville, and Mobile also have connections to the rest of the US via the Greyhound bus network.
